Why do chipboard screws have a partial thread?
The partial thread fulfills two functions: The lower threaded section anchors the screw firmly in the lower material. The upper smooth shank section, on the other hand, pulls the upper panel downward without friction – creating a tight, gap-free connection. With a full thread screw, the thread would 'bite' into the upper material and the panels would not be drawn together cleanly. For chipboard, the partial thread is therefore the only sensible choice.
Can I also use chipboard screws in solid wood?
Yes, it is generally possible, but not optimal. In solid wood or plywood, you are better off using special wood screws with full thread and a different tip geometry. Chipboard screws with partial thread may not generate enough tensile force in solid wood with thick boards under certain circumstances. However, they are sufficient for light connections or if you only occasionally screw into solid wood.
