Balance bikes – often called running bikes – are the ideal introduction to the world of children's vehicles. Without pedals or training wheels, little ones learn to balance playfully, coordinate steering, and control their own speed. These are the criteria you should consider when buying:
- Frame height and saddle: The seat height should be chosen so that your child can stand flat on the ground with both feet – typically between 30 and 45 cm. For two- to three-year-olds, models with a saddle height of 33–38 cm are suitable; for four- to six-year-olds, 38–45 cm.
- Tire type: Air tires offer better cushioning and grip on asphalt and unpaved paths, but require more maintenance. EVA foam tires are puncture-proof, airless, and lighter – ideal for indoor or terrace use only.
- Material:Steel frames are robust and inexpensive, but heavy. Aluminum or wood are lighter and often more durable, with wooden frames (e.g., birch plywood) offering a natural feel and being particularly stable.
- Brake:Beginner models often come without a brake (balance bikes are braked with the feet). As soon as children are moving faster, a hand brake makes sense – pay attention to a child-friendly lever force.
- Weight:The balance bike should weigh no more than about 4 kg. A lighter bike makes steering and braking easier for little arms and legs.
Typical areas of use are sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, and also your own property. Make sure the balance bike has a steering angle limiter to prevent the handlebar from being turned too far – this reduces falls.

From what age is a balance bike suitable?
Most children can start using a balance bike from about 2 years old – provided they can walk confidently and have a height of at least 85 cm. It is important that your child can place their feet flat on the ground. For younger children (12–18 months), ride-on toys are a better alternative as they offer more stability.
What should I look for in tire size?
Common sizes are 12, 14, or 16 inches. 12 inches fit the smallest riders (2–3 years), 14 inches are the standard size for 3–4 years, and 16 inches for 4–6 years. The tire size should match the child's inseam: stand the child with their back to the wall and measure the distance from the floor to the crotch. The saddle should be adjusted so that this height plus 2–3 cm clearance is achieved.
Which material is better: wood or metal?
Wooden frames (usually birch plywood) are lightweight, flexible, and feel warm – ideal for indoor use. However, they are more sensitive to moisture and impacts. Aluminum frames are corrosion-resistant, very lightweight, and durable – perfect for outdoor use. Steel frames are sturdy but significantly heavier. For outdoor use, we recommend aluminum; for indoor use or switching between both worlds, wood with appropriate care.
