The origin of all today's vans and transporters goes back to the Plattenwagen (slab wagon) used for internal transport at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg production facility in the late 1940s, which inspired the Dutch importer Ben Pon to come up with the idea of ​​a transport vehicle. At the end of the 1940s, VW developed several prototypes for a spacious vehicle suitable for transport purposes. Since none of the initially desired names could be used without restrictions, the new vehicle class was given the name Transporter. The first generation Transporter went into series production on March 8, 1950. The vehicle, with its typical V-shaped front end and split windshield, was available in various versions, including a minibus. The technology was based on that of the Volkswagen Type 1, the so-called Beetle, so the T1 featured an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine. The power of the reliable 1.2-liter rear-mounted engine increased to 34 hp in 1961. The luxury version of the minibus, the nine-seater special model, is still known today as the Samba Bus and exudes a distinctive automotive charm with oval skylights, extremely comfortable seats, a folding roof, and numerous chrome parts.

Thanks to all the movable doors, the kit allows a deep look into the spacious interior. Due to the high demand, even in the USA, either the European or American version can be built.
