The spindle tree is arguably one of the woody plants with the most beautiful autumn colors. The bright red appears as if the plant were on fire. In contrast, the inconspicuous, greenish-yellow flowers bloom from May to June. After flowering, red capsule fruits, resembling miniature spindle trees, adorn the bushy shrub. The fruits are not suitable for human consumption, but are readily accepted by various bird species. In winter, the plant impresses with bark outgrowths, known as cork ridges.
