The original "Lemsteraak" ship was launched in 1876 at the "Gebr. de Boer" shipyard in Lemmer, Friesland. The Catalina was originally designed as a fishing boat and operated in the northern part of the Zuiderzee, where shipping is not without its challenges due to strong tides and headwinds. Therefore, a ship was needed that was maneuverable and also had to have an adequate sail area.
