For primer coats on iron, steel, zinc; aluminum, powder coating, wood and various plastics such as rigid PVC, polyester, polyamide, ABS, indoors and outdoors.
Substrate preparation
The substrate must be dry and free of scale, oil, grease, dust and other contaminants. Loose rust and mill scale must be removed without fail. Borax residues must be completely removed from brazed joints.
Galvanized surfaces: Corrosion products, grease and other contaminants must be thoroughly removed. Pre-treatment with diluted ammonia in combination with a wetting agent has proven effective for preparing zinc surfaces. Add 0.5 liters of ammonia to 10 liters of water. Ammonia and approximately 8 ml (1 tablespoon) of wetting agent, e.g., dish soap, Pril, etc. Using this mixture, sand the surface using a plastic fleece (e.g., Scotch-Pritt from 3M Company) until the foam turns metallic gray. The foam must be left on the surface for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. Lightly sanding over with a sandblaster has also proven to be very effective.
Aluminum: Before coating, degrease with nitro thinner and remove corrosion products by sanding.
Plastics: Wash off dirt with an all-purpose cleaner and rinse thoroughly. Sand with fine sandpaper (280-320) and rub with a cloth soaked in spirit.
Existing coatings: Check for strength and sand. (Preliminary tests recommended)
Powder coating:
Wash thoroughly with a 10% ammonia solution and add a wetting agent using a plastic fleece and sand. Conduct preliminary tests if necessary.
