The field spade, or short spade, in the traditional style, is by far the most versatile outdoor tool imaginable, second only to the knife. It splits firewood, fells trees, clears a path through undergrowth, shovels campfires, serves as a climbing aid on steep slopes, serves as a makeshift crowbar, emergency paddle, and knife. Compared to the folding spades commonly used today, it is considerably more robust, which is required for the uses listed above.

Follows the original design of the first German field spade, which was introduced in 1874 by imperial decree under the designation "portable entrenching tool" for infantry and hunter battalions. The two-part blade and spring construction is connected with five strong rivets, additionally secured with a 40 mm wide steel ferrule, and encompasses the break-resistant ashwood handle for half its length. This older design is complex and costly to manufacture, as two punching and bending tools must be manufactured, and significantly more work steps are required for assembly. However, it rewards the effort with unparalleled stability. Along with later models, the M1874 field spade was used in both World Wars.

In keeping with the historical model, the edges of the spade blade are pre-ground and not ground upon delivery. Digging, splitting wood, and limbing are already possible in this condition; however, for use as a machete or knife, it is recommended to finish grinding the edges by hand. To adapt to today's needs and possibilities, minimal modifications to the original were made to create a modern bushcraft tool. A tough, rust-proof stainless steel was chosen for the blade and spring, which is also used in the construction of steam turbine blades and surgical instruments. It exhibits high resistance to breakage and shock loads and is easy to resharpen, even under field conditions. One simple sharpening method, for example, is to place both edges flat on a concrete block with the inside of the blade facing down. The sheath, with two belt loops, is made of water-resistant and rot-proof black nylon with a durable plastic insert, rather than leather, which requires a lot of care.
